Two-Mode System - Versatility is one of the keys of the Chrysler Aspen. And the All-New 2009 Chrysler Aspen Hybrid takes that a step further with its two-mode system that integrates a hybrid-electric drive system which reduces fuel consumption by almost 54 percent while running errands in town, but still has the power of a 5.7 HEMI V8 for towing and highway driving. In the first mode, the enfine is shut off, while one of the two electric motors provides acceleration without using a drop of fuel. In the second mode, the electric motors "tag team" with the HEMI V8, providing the needed power for highway speeds, passing, pulling a trailer, and steep grades. The seamless shifting between these two transmission modes delievers fuel-efficient performance and makes the Chrysler Aspen Hybrid a smart decision for both you and the environment.
Regenerative Braking
The beauty of Hybrid technology is its efficient use of energy. Especially impressive is the ability of the Chrysler Aspen Hybrid to harness energy that would normally be wasted during driving, and work it back into the system. When the Chrysler Aspen Hybrid id idling slowly, or when the driver lifts his/her foot off the accelerator, energy is produced and used to recharge the battery pack. In addtion, the electric motor, which propels the vehicle forward, generates electricity when the brakes are applied. This energy is stored and used to accelerate the vehicle during stop-and-go traffic and toassist the gas engine - when necessary - for top fuel-efficiency.
Hybrid Energy Center
Located in the vehicle's uconnect gps display, the Hybrid Energy Center or HEC, keeps you informed of your hybrid's operations. Through a simple diagram, the Hybrid Energy Center alerts you to when you are using the electric motor, the HEMI engine or a combination of them both. Likewise, it shows you when your battery is recharging during braking and the level of the battery remaining, so you are always informed to how your Hybrid is performing.
Startup
After turning the key, the hybrid energy mode states that the vehicle is ready. Although no noise appears, System Ready appears at the bottom of the screen, indicating the vehicle is on and ready to be driven.
Hybrid Energy
Strictly in electric mode, the HEC illustrates how the power is being distributed through the vehicle. The lightning bolt denotes taht electric power is being used. Arrows show the distribution of power and to the engine and the wheels.
Fuel Saver Mode
Utilizing the multi-displacement system of the 5.7 HEMI®, the Chrysler Aspen goes into fuel saver mode. While it's being powered by the gasoline engine, it is still saving fuel as 4 of the 8 cylinders are shut down. The engine is half shaded, indicating that the multi-displacement system has shut off four cylinders. The HEMI® engine actually helps power the battery while in use.
HEMI® 5.7 V8 Engine
Full power. Gasoline is powering all eight cylinders of the HEMI®l engine at high speeds. While the electric motor is providing even more of the boost. The engine is fully shaded, illustrating that the HEMI® is poweing the vehicle.
Regenerative Braking
When braking, the kinetic energy normally lost is actually harnessed by the vehicle, helping to recharge the battery. The blue indicates that energy and arrows are being harnessed to the battery.
