Days have gone for traditional file serving and Direct Attached Storage (DAS) where server was responsible for serving/storing and managing the data. Now devices such as NAS and SAN are prominently used store large amount of data in enterprises. Generally NAS is referred as “File level storage” and SAN as “Block level storage”. At Disk Doctor Labs, we have specialized and effective in-house developed techniques to recover data from DAS, NAS and SAN.

NAS is more than just general centralized data storage provided to users in environments with large amounts of data. NAS provides simpler and low cost systems for load-balancing and fault-tolerant file, email and web server systems. The potential emerging market for NAS is the consumer market where there is huge amount of multi-media data. NAS comes in various options differing in interface and type of drives, which mostly works on “NFS, SMB or CIFS” based file storage methods and has either SATA or SCSI drives in RAID array.

Whereas SAN is referred to as Enterprise storage, it connects remote targets such as disk drives, tape drives on a network for block level I/O, also it uses Fibre and iSCSI protocols for the transfer of data over network which provides the fastest data transfer rates.

Upon receiving your request for the analysis of the storage, we gather valuable information about the NAS or SAN boxes, such as:
  • Level of RAID i.e. RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5
  • Exact cause for the failure
  • Complete details of any hit and trial method which has been tried before sending the job to us.

Once we receive complete information as mentioned above we start the recovery process, there are various specialized methods of recovery which may include.
  • Taking failed drives to clean room and getting them to work
  • To create a secure replica of complete array with a specialized in-house technique.
  • Identifying parity technique, using in-house developed applications
  • Then proceeding ahead recovering data following parity order and picking fragmented stripes together (applicable to RAID 5 arrays)

There is much more complexity involved besides the points mentioned above, which is tackled with other in-house developed techniques. Once everything goes well data is recovered to the expectation and is delivered to you on choice of your media. To recover data from all the below mentioned cases we follow a standardized data recovery process in all our data recovery labs across the globe.
