This feature allows you to configure your backups to store a copy of your data being sent to Data Vault’s secure storage facility can also be stored on your local network via DVC Gateway, NAS or local drive. This allows for fast restores, even of large data stores such as mail or database servers, which are initiated immediately (no waiting for tapes to be delivered) and occur at LAN speeds. – even if you're using WAN technologies such as DSL or cable.

Data Vault stores a copy of all backed up data with the DVC Gateway/Local Storage at the customer site in addition to storing the data at the Data Center. The DVC Gateway is sized to allow for a copy of all customer data to be stored locally. This allows large volumes of data (e.g. a 50 GB Exchange store) to be restored very quickly at LAN speeds. The DVC Gateway even contains a second 1GB Ethernet to allow for a “restore” network to be established to allow the restore to take place without impacting your production LAN.

FEATURES:

Benefits
  • Risk Reduction - the vulnerability of your organization having incomplete backups is virtually eliminated.
  • Increased Productivity - by removing the tedious tasks of managing the backup and restore process, your highly-trained IT staff is freed to tackle more challenging IT issues.
  • Disaster Contingency - This service has inherent disaster recovery capabilities, allowing you to continue your work regardless of unforeseen disasters.
  • Reduced Backup Times – “Delta-blocking” ensures that only changed portions of a file are transmitted. Compression methods further reduce the data size.
  • Reduced Recovery Times - Restore times for accidentally deleted files are dramatically reduced, which can help make your end users more productive.
  • Ease of Future Planning – This service is scalable and can upgrade as your data grows.
  • Cost Effectiveness - Our service is priced to be competitive with hardware/software offerings which attempt to address the same issues.
  • Minimal Capital Outlay – The customer is charged on a monthly 'usage' basis. You only pay for the amount of storage (post-compression) used. There is a nominal, one-time fee for setup.

Local Backup/Restore This feature allows you to configure your backups to store a copy of your data being sent to Data Vault’s secure storage facility can also be stored on your local network via DVC Gateway, NAS or local drive.

Benefits
  • Immediate Initiation – since the data is locally resident on the gateway, the restore can be initiated immediately without waiting for data to be delivered from an off-site location.
  • Reduced Recovery Times – the data is restored over the LAN at 100 Mbps or 1Gbps. Even if you have a 100 Mbps production LAN, you can use the DVC Gateway’s second Ethernet port to create a direct connection to the target server to restore at 1GB speeds without impacting your production LAN.

Technical Specifications
  • Latest version of all files, databases and mail stores are available locally on the Gateway
  • The Gateway is sized to allow sufficient hard disk space for ALL your data.
  • Second NIC on the Gateway allows restores on a private network which is independent of your production LAN.

Protect your Oracle/SQL Server or DB2 Database
Backup of the entire Information Store for a database server (SQL*Server 2000/2005, Oracle and DB2) without agents and without taking the server offline. The most time- and cost-effective method for disaster recovery purposes.

Data Vault service supports “hot”, online backup of Microsoft SQL*Server, Oracle and DB2 enterprise-class databases. For each of these databases, the entire data store is backed up without agents and without affecting end users. Due to DVC’s unique delta-blocking capabilities, each backup captures all changes (logically equivalent to a “full” tape backup) while dramatically reducing the amount of data transmitted and stored (logically equivalent to an “incremental” tape backup). During a restore, simply select the date of backup and the system handles the reconstruction of the database — no need for you to track the “full” or “incremental” backups.

Security
During the creation of the backup sets, credentials are entered and stored on the DVC Gateway in an encrypted fashion The backed up data is encrypted while it is being transmitted to the data center and when it is stored there. At no point will DVC personnel have access to the data in the data center.

What is Supported The Data Vault service supports the following enterprise-class databases:
  • Microsoft SQL*Server 2000, Oracle 8.x, 9.x, 10g on Windows and Unix/Linux, DB2
  • For Microsoft SQL*Server 2000 and Oracle on a Windows 2000/2003 server, the DVC Gateway will be a Windows 2003 Server. For Oracle on a Unix (e.g. Solaris) server and DB2, the DVC Gateway will be a Linux server.

Technical Specifications
  • Backups and restores are performed at the database level, thereby executing in a time and resource efficient manner for DR purposes
  • All backups are performed without taking the database server off-line
  • Restores of the latest backup can be performed quickly over the local LAN via the DVC Gateway
  • No agents
  • Support for SQL*Server 2000, Oracle 8/9/10 and DB2

Protect your Mail Server
Backup of the entire Microsoft Exchange Information Store for a mail server without agents and without taking the server offline. The most time- and cost-effective method for disaster recovery purposes. Other mail servers that are supported include Lotus Notes/Domino, Groupwise and SendMail.

Mail Servers (Exchange, Lotus Domino, Groupwise)

The entire Information Store (IS) is backed up without agents and without affecting end users.

Data Vault supports “hot,” online backup of Microsoft® Exchange 2000 and 2003. The entire Information Store (IS) is backed up without agents and without affecting end users. Due to DVC’s unique delta-blocking capabilities, each backup captures all changes (logically equivalent to a “full” tape backup) while dramatically reducing the amount of data transmitted and stored (logically equivalent to an “incremental” tape backup). During a restore, simply select the date of backup and Data Vault system handles the reconstruction of the Information Store — no need for you to track the “full” or “incremental” backup.

Overview
Data Vault service support two types of backup of Microsoft® Exchange data: Message Level Restore (MLR) and full Information Store (IS). The former allows for online backup and restore at the mailbox, folder or message level. This is convenient but cumbersome for Disaster Recovery (DR) purposes. To address DR, DVC offers full IS backup and restore features. With this feature, the Exchange IS is backed up or restored at the data store level without loading agents on the Exchange server, thereby being more time and resource efficient for DR purposes. Many companies perform the IS backup on a weekly basis and perform the MLR backup on a daily basis.

How it works Backup — Microsoft® developed Exchange with the backup requirement in mind by providing APIs that, when accessed by DVC, will command Exchange to dump the entire Information Store. The DVC Gateway simply asks the specified Exchange server to stream the IS data to the Gateway where it is delta-blocked, compressed, encrypted and transmitted to the DVC data center. During this process, all pending transactions are committed and the transactions logs are truncated while continuing to process all new transactions (i.e. incoming and outgoing mail). The latest version of the Information Store is stored on the DVC Gateway. This process is a totally supported Microsoft® function and guarantees compatibility with your existing Microsoft® systems.

Restore — During a restore, the DVC Gateway will restore the entire IS or an individual data store (depending on how the backup was configured) to the target Exchange server. The target Exchange server can be the original backed up server or a new, different server in the same Active Directory® forest. The DVC Gateway always keeps a copy of the latest snapshot of the Exchange IS. Past experience has shown that most Exchange IS restores are for the latest backup and therefore, most Exchange IS restores are accomplished quickly over the local LAN. If older data is required, Data Vault service can access the data in the DVC data center through the WAN or DVC can ship a portable data vault to your site within 24-48 hours of a disaster being declared. As with all DVC activities, there is no extra charge for shipping the portable data vault.

What is Supported
Data Vault supports IS backup and restore capabilities for Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003. Since Exchange 2003 supports multiple data stores, Data Vault service supports backup and restore of each data store individually (version 6 and greater). At present, you cannot recover to a Recovery Storage Group (RSG) although the normal backup and recovery will not be affected if your organization uses RSGs.

Technical Specifications
  • Backups and restores are performed at the IS or data store level, thereby executing in a time and resource efficient manner for DR purposes
  • All backups are performed without taking the Exchange server off-line
  • Restores of the latest backup can be performed quickly over the local LAN via the DVC Gateway
  • No agents
  • Support for Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003
