VALTREX is the first and only once-daily herpes medication clinically proven to reduce the number of outbreaks you get. In fact, many people on daily therapy with VALTREX may go a year outbreak-free.
A clinical study among people who had 6 or more outbreaks a year found that over half of those people were outbreak-free after taking VALTREX for 6 months. After a year, over one third were outbreak-free. Ask your healthcare provider if daily VALTREX is right for you.
There are no data on the safety and effectiveness of suppressive therapy with VALTREX for more than one year.
Important Information About Valtrex
Valtrex is for adults with healthy immune systems and is available by prescription only. There is no cure for herpes, and even with treatment, it may be possible to spread herpes. Valtrex may not prevent all recurrences.
If you are taking Valtrex to reduce the risk of spreading genital herpes, always use safer sex practices. This includes always using a condom made of latex and avoiding sexual contact when you have an outbreak or think you are about to get an outbreak. It is not known if Valtrex reduces the risk of spreading genital herpes in same-sex couples.
While taking Valtrex for cold sores, you should not exceed one day of treatment, two doses taken 12 hours apart.
Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems because the dosage may need to be changed.
To avoid a potentially serious complication, tell your doctor if your immune system is not normal because of advanced HIV disease, bone marrow or kidney transplant. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dizziness, cold, and sore throat.

Directions:
Follow the directions for taking Valtrex 500mg provided by your doctor. TAKE VALTREX 500mg with or without food. If stomach upset occurs, take with food to reduce stomach irritation. DRINKING EXTRA FLUIDS while you are taking Valtrex 500mg is recommended. Check with your doctor for instructions. STORE VALTREX 500mg between 59 and 77 degrees F (15 and 25 degrees C) away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. TO TREAT COLD SORES, CHICKENPOX, SHINGLES, OR GENITAL HERPES, start treatment as soon as possible after your symptoms start. IF TREATING AN ACUTE OUTBREAK, use Valtrex 500mg for the full course of treatment. Keep using it even if you feel better in a few days. FOR SUPPRESSIVE THERAPY, Valtrex 500mg works best if it is taken at the same time each day. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF VALTREX 500mg, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. DO NOT take 2 doses at once.

LAB TESTS, including complete blood cell counts, kidney function, and liver function, may be performed to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Keep all doctor and lab appointments while you are taking Valtrex 500mg. VALTREX 500mg MAY CAUSE DIZZINESS. This effect may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Valtrex 500mg with caution. DO NOT DRIVE OR PERFORM OTHER POSSIBLY UNSAFE TASKS until you know how you react to it. SAFER SEX PRACTICES can lower the chances of passing genital herpes to your partner. Do NOT have sexual contact with your partner when you have any symptoms or outbreak of genital herpes. USE A CONDOM made of latex or polyurethane whenever you have sexual contact. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINES, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. Use Valtrex 500mg with caution in the ELDERLY; they may be more sensitive to its effects, especially kidney and nervous system problems. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU THINK YOU MAY BE PREGNANT, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Valtrex 500mg while you are pregnant. VALTREX 500mg IS FOUND in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you use Valtrex 500mg, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby. |
